Could free-agent forward Ed Davis be the elusive missing piece for the Los Angeles Clippers' top-heavy front-line?

Davis was once a highly touted prospect with the Toronto Raptors, who drafted him 13th overall in 2010. However, he toiled behind established veterans and became an afterthought. Eventually, he was dealt to the Memphis Grizzlies in 2013, where he once again got buried behind established veterans. The Grizzlies neglected to tender Davis an qualifying offer, making him an unrestricted free-agent.

Having never been awarded with consistent minutes in his career, Davis' per-game averages are not impressive. He averaged 5.7 points, 4.1 rebounds and 0.7 blocks in 15.2 minutes per game last season.

However, Davis' contributions have always shined through the spectrum of advanced statistics. He posted a PER of 15.9 last season, and has consistently ranked above-average in both PER and Win Shares per 48 minutes.

His skill set is limited to rim-protection and rebounding, with the occasional put-back or left-handed hook shot from the low-post. He can't consistently sink the mid-range jumper, which may give the Clippers pause, but he is able to anchor a defense for stretches, which would represent a huge upgrade over the Clippers' current options.

As a casual reminder, the Clippers played the likes of Jared Dudley, Danny Granger, Glen Davis, Antawn Jamison, Hedo Turkoglu, Ryan Hollins, Byron Mullens and Stephen Jackson at the four-spot last season.
