Donovan: I had no idea Westbrook was going to sign extension

Oklahoma City Thunder head coach Billy Donovan lost one of his two superstars this summer, but he got a renewed commitment from the other.

Donovan has seen quite a bit of Russell Westbrook since Kevin Durant opted to leave for Golden State, but he says he never had an inkling Westbrook was about to sign a three-year, $85-million contract renegotiation that will keep him out of free agency until at least 2018.

"I didn't have any idea," Donovan said, according to Erik Horne of The Oklahoman.

Donovan was checking in on Westbrook and new Thunder shooting guard Victor Oladipo during their workouts in Los Angeles when the deal was struck. There was speculation beforehand that the Thunder might look to trade Westbrook - who, before signing the new deal, was slated for unrestricted free agency a year from now - but Donovan said his point guard's long-term future with the club never entered the frame during their time together.

"We never really talked about any of that stuff," he said. "My conversations with Russell were always about the team, next season, what we have to do, how we need to play."

Now that Westbrook has recommitted to the Thunder program in the wake of Durant's departure, he and Donovan can focus on growing their relationship.

"That's the most important part," Westbrook said at his press conference Thursday. "Just creating a better bond. ...

"I think coming into next year our relationship is in a great spot."
