Report: Thunder could field offers for Westbrook without early extension

The Oklahoma City Thunder are reportedly considering an attempt to extend Russell Westbrook's contract before he can reach free agency next summer, sources told ESPN's Brian Windhorst, although that seems like a remote possibility.

In addition, Windhorst reports that should Westbrook refuse to extend his contract this summer, league executives believe the Thunder will consider fielding trade offers for the superstar point guard.

Westbrook, a five-time All-Star and the two-time reigning All-Star Game MVP, is set to earn $17.8 million in the final year of his contract, but with the salary cap on track for another sizable increase next summer, the 27-year-old can maximize his future earnings by waiting until then to sign his next long-term contract.

Westbrook averaged 23.5 points, 10.4 assists, 7.8 rebounds, and two steals in 80 games with the Thunder during the 2015-16 season, his eighth in Oklahoma City.
