Galaxy president confirms LA will choose new head coach by year's end

LA Galaxy president Chris Klein says the search for a new head coach should be resolved by the end of the calendar year, with internal and external options being considered for the role.

"We're actively preparing for 2017 now," Klein said, as quoted by the team's official website. "We know that a head coach has to be integrated in that process and needs to have a voice in that process. The sooner the better for us, and we expect to have a new coach in place before the new year."

The club is considering a host of names from within Major League Soccer to replace Bruce Arena as head coach, with Galaxy II boss Curt Onalfo among the shortlist being weighed for the post.

Arena, who departed the Galaxy to become the manager of the U.S. men's national team, served as both the head coach and manager of the club during his nine-year tenure.

The Galaxy hired a new general manager in Peter Vagenas, but finding a strong head coach is imperative for the club, too.

"It's imperative that we hire someone who is familiar with our club and our philosophy," Klein said, as quoted by ESPN FC.

"I'm not trying to get the new Bruce Arena. I'm trying to take the next step from what he has brought this club and celebrate all that he was."

One of the names being considered is former Seattle Sounders boss and long-serving MLS manager Sigi Schmid. Klein hinted that Schmid would be considered, but added, "We haven't spoken yet though."

While Klein wouldn't say specifically who he was targeting, he did confirm Galaxy assistant coach Dave Sarachan will not be given the post.
