Rangers fire pitching coach Mike Maddux
The Texas Rangers have fired pitching coach Mike Maddux, general manager Jon Daniels announced Thursday.
Maddux, the club's pitching coach since 2009, was considering potential opportunities with other teams after initially rejecting a contract offer from the Rangers, who got tired of waiting and ultimately decided to cut ties with the 54-year-old.
"There are some intriguing candidates, both internal and external," Daniels told reporters. "We made an offer to our coaches and at that point, Mike was looking around. We took the opportunity to do so, too. We did an internal review and decided that, as we talked it through, we felt like it was an opportunity for us to get better with a new voice in that role."
Daniels also revealed Hall of Famer Greg Maddux won't return to the club as a special assistant, with his brother now out of the mix.
The Rangers also parted ways with hitting coach Dave Magadan after the season.
