Marty McFly may have witnessed what he thought was an impossible reality in "Back to the Future 2," but there's a chance that what he saw may become a real-life outcome.

In the film, McFly travels into the future, where he is surprised to learn that the Chicago Cubs have won the World Series over Miami in the year 2015.

"Being a baseball fan, I thought, 'OK, let's come up with one of the most unlikely scenarios we can think of,'" co-writer of the film Bob Gale told the Daily Herald's Christopher Placek.

If the Cubs can defeat the Pittsburgh Pirates in the National League wild-card game on Wednesday, it will be the first step towards making the film's once absurd prediction a realism.

"... We'll do our best to make sure that happens," Cubs pitcher Jake Arrieta, who starts Wednesday, told Placek.

The Cubs haven't won a World Series since 1908.
