Astros' Springer placed on DL with fractured right wrist, expected to miss at least 6 weeks

The Houston Astros three-game sweep over the Kansas City Royals on Wednesday appears to have come at a significant cost.

Outfielder George Springer has been placed on the 15-day disabled list with a fractured right wrist.

"It's definitely going to be a significant loss of time, but we'll have to find a way to overcome it," Astros general manager Jeff Luhnow said Thursday.

Luhnow expects the youngster to miss at least six weeks with the non-displaced fracture, and says Springer will be re-evaluated in two weeks to determine a more precise timeline for a return.

The 25-year-old checked his swing on a 95-mph fastball by Kansas City Royals starter Edinson Volquez in the fifth inning, and was subsequently drilled in the right wrist, falling to the ground in pain.

Springer slowly made his way to first base before being visited by the team's trainer. He remained in the game to run the bases before being lifted in the sixth, and was initially diagnosed with a contusion.

Springer, Houston's 11th-overall pick in the 2011 draft, is hitting .263/.363/.456 with 13 home runs, 14 doubles, and 29 RBIs in 74 games.

The team has recalled Alex Presley from Triple-A Fresno in his stead.
