Royals place Danny Duffy on 15-day DL with biceps tendinitis, recall Brandon Finnegan

Danny Duffy was expected to take the mound Tuesday in New York after being bumped from Saturday's scheduled start due to shoulder stiffness.

The 26-year-old won't pitch in the Bronx this week, however, as the Kansas City Royals placed Duffy on the 15-day disabled list prior to Monday afternoon's series opener against the Yankees due to left biceps tendinitis. In a corresponding move, the Royals recalled left-hander Brandon Finnegan from Triple-A Omaha to take his spot on the active roster.

Royals manager Ned Yost said he wasn't too concerned about Duffy when broached about the left-hander's condition Friday. Though, the young hurler missed the final few weeks of the 2014 season and made just three appearances - all in relief - throughout the playoffs after experiencing shoulder problems in September.

Duffy, who led the Royals with a 2.53 ERA (156 ERA+) last season, owns an unimpressive 5.87 ERA across eight starts in 2015, issuing 19 walks while allowing 46 hits in 38 1/3 innings.

Jason Vargas, meanwhile, will start Tuesday in Duffy's absence after spending the last three weeks on the DL with a strained flexor muscle in his left elbow, according to Andy McCullough of the Kansas City Star. Vargas, who managed a 5.26 ERA over five starts before landing on the DL May 8, threw a simulated game Friday without any issues.
