Report: Braves agree to minor-league deal with Wil Nieves
Veteran catcher Wil Nieves reportedly found a new job Wednesday, less than 48 hours after electing free agency from the San Diego Padres instead of accepting an outright assignment.
Nieves agreed to a minor-league deal with the Atlanta Braves, according to Baseball America's Matt Eddy, and is expected to provide depth behind the plate at Triple-A Gwinnett.
The 37-year-old appeared in six games for the Padres this season, filling in for injured backup Tim Federowicz, but was designated for assignment earlier this month to create a spot for top prospect Austin Hedges on the 25-man roster.
Though Christian Bethancourt was expected to receive the majority of the playing time behind the plate for Atlanta this season, the 23-year-old has hit just .173 with no home runs in 15 games. A.J. Pierzynski has consequently logged considerable time at catcher for the Braves, managing an impressive .814 OPS (120 OPS+) with three home runs over 19 contests.
