The Kansas City Royals obtained additional depth behind the plate on Tuesday by agreeing to a minor-league deal with catcher Brayan Pena, a source told Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports.

Pena will receive an invitation to big-league camp in spring training, despite the Royals already possessing a catching duo of Salvador Perez and Drew Butera, both of whom are signed to multi-year contracts.

This will be the second stop of Pena's career in Kansas City, as the 35-year-old spent 2009-12 with the club, amassing a .251/.291/.355 slash line with 12 home runs and 86 RBIs during 823 plate appearances.

Pena spent last season with the St. Louis Cardinals after signing a two-year deal in November of 2015, but only appeared in nine games because of knee injuries.

He was released by the club in November.

The veteran owns a career slash line of .259/.299/.351 over 12 MLB seasons split between the Royals, Cardinals, Cincinnati Reds, Atlanta Braves, and Detroit Tigers. He's also thrown out 28 percent of base runners who tried to steal on him.
