Report: Trumbo willing to sign discounted deal with Orioles

The waiting game of the Baltimore Orioles may pay dividends in free agency once again, and this time, it may help them save a bunch of money in regards to home run king Mark Trumbo.

Trumbo's camp has been in back-and-forth negotiations with the Orioles for most of the offseason. After he recently asked the Orioles for a three-year, $50-million contract, the slugger later indicated he'd be willing to sign a deal of similar length but in the range of $40 million-$50 million, sources told FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal.

Trumbo's willingness to accept a three-year deal worth under $50 million has apparently created room for the two sides to negotiate again after the Orioles reportedly took an offer in the range of $70 million-$75 million off the table in mid-December.

Orioles executive vice president of baseball operations Dan Duquette has developed a reputation for waiting out the market during his time in Baltimore, and it appears he's willing to do the same with Trumbo, although he did recently suggest the team may be more interested in the draft pick compensation it would acquire if Trumbo signed with another club.

"As far as the club goes, as far as the Orioles go, we kind of like the draft pick since the value of that draft pick has been enhanced with the negotiations from the new basic agreement," Duquette explained to MLB Network Radio when asked about re-signing Trumbo. "... The level is diluted next year so we like the draft pick and we like some of the other options, some shorter-term options, on the market that would be more cost-effective to the club so that's how we're proceeding in terms of assembling our team."

One rival executive told Rosenthal he senses the relationship between Trumbo and the Orioles is damaged, and he'd prefer to sign somewhere else.

The 30-year-old Trumbo may also have interest from the Texas Rangers and Colorado Rockies.

Trumbo hit .256/.316/.533 with 108 RBIs for the Orioles last season, while leading the majors in home runs with 47.
