D-Backs use Greinke, Miller in unique ways during loss

The Arizona Diamondbacks really wanted the win on Sunday against the Pittsburgh Pirates and they were willing to pull out all of the stops to get it.

Down two runs in the 12th inning, Arizona turned to their 1-2 pitching punch of Zack Greinke and Shelby Miller in roles they aren't normally accustomed to with the hope of getting something started. The gusty moves by manager Chip Hale paid off.

After Greinke - who walked to the plate hitting .429 on the season - squared up a Neftali Feliz pitch for a seeing-eye single, he was replaced on the base paths by Miller, who eventually used his wheels to go first to third on a David Peralta double and later scored on a Jean Segura RBI single to tie the game.

But the fun wasn't over after that.

Miller ended up staying in the game to play left field for the top of the 13th inning. He was tested early, but effortlessly fielded a Sean Rodriguez double off the wall.

Unfortunately, the moves were only short-lived moments of luck, as the Pirates eventually walked away victorious, 12-10.

The pitching duo of Greinke and Miller - who came at the hefty price of $206.5 million and prospects such as Dansby Swanson, Ender Inciarte, and Aaron Blair - are no slouches off the mound.

Before becoming pitchers full time, Greinke played shortstop, while Miller was a tight end and defensive end during his high school football days.
