The Royals and Rangers have only met once this season, which took place last Friday through Sunday. In that series, the Rangers took two of three, and Texas' starters pitched to a combined 1.65 ERA despite averaging just 5.1 innings per start.

Kansas City snapped a four-game skid by knocking off the Angels, 7-5, at home on Wednesday. In the game, the Royals' first five hitters in the lineup went a combined 2-for-18 (.111 batting average), while batters sixth through ninth in the order were 9-for-16 (.563).

In their last game, the Rangers lost at home to the A's, 6-4. Texas made another error in the game, marking the team's 22nd error in its last 17 games. That equates to a .965 team fielding percentage, which is the lowest in baseball over that span (.986 before that).

At home against Texas in his last start, Yordano Ventura recorded the loss, tossing 5 innings of three-run ball. The Royals have lost in each of Ventura's last five starts, after the team had won nine of his first 14 starts this season.

Cole Hamels got the win in Kansas City on Saturday, throwing 5.1 innings while allowing just one (unearned) run. However, Hamels also walked three, which marked the tenth start that he has surrendered at least three walks this season. He is one of five AL starting pitchers in 2016 with ten or more starts allowing three or more walks.

Jurickson Profar went 3-for-5 on Wednesday, marking the third three-hit game of his career and first since June of 2013. It also raised his home batting average this season to .375, which is much higher than his .233 average away from Arlington.

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP)  Mitch Moreland can hit home runs in bunches for the Texas Rangers. Those long balls are coming at a good time.
Moreland homered with two outs in the ninth inning Saturday night to give the AL West-leading Rangers a 2-1 victory over the Kansas City Royals. That came two nights after he homered twice in a 3-2 win in the series opener against the stumbling defending World Series champions.
