Hockey fans everywhere are mourning the loss of one of the game's unsung heroes after Matthew Wuest died of cancer Thursday morning.

Wuest was a Halifax-based sports reporter who created the website CapGeek, which became an essential resource for anyone curious about the financial side of the NHL. He had been battling colon cancer for over two years when the site ceased operations in January.

"He was just a great guy who really loved what he did," Metro Halifax managing editor Philip Croucher said Thursday. "I've never seen anyone do it better."

A humble man focused more on the quality of his work than the notoriety it could bring, Wuest never publicized his involvement in CapGeek and most people were unaware he was the site's creator prior to his death.

"He didn't go for the attention that he could have gotten through that site," Croucher said of CapGeek. "He was able to do that, and still without question, be the best sports reporter in Halifax – that speaks volumes to the talent that he was."
