Rangers name Ryan McDonagh captain

As expected, defenseman Ryan McDonagh was named the 27th captain in New York Rangers history.

The 25-year-old University of Wisconsin product had a breakout season in 2013-14, notching career highs in goals (14), assists (29) and points (43), while establishing himself as one of the top defenseman in the Eastern Conference.

"Ryan McDonagh exemplifies what we want a New York Ranger to be,” Rangers president and general manager Glen Sather told the team's official website. “He has earned the respect of his teammates through his commitment to excellence, both on and off the ice, and the passion with which he plays on a consistent basis. He is the ideal choice to lead our team as its captain.”

The Rangers also announced Derek Stepan, Martin St. Louis, Dan Girardi and Marc Staal will serve as alternate captains.
