Strengths

  • Versatility is a major asset as he's proven he can play any position along the offensive line at a high level. Pro-ready at center, he could be developed outside or at guard should a team desire it.
  • Moves fluidly for a man his size, allowing him to get out in space in the run game. Has the willingness to finish blocks.
  • Has shown consistent ability to adapt and learn, which will endear him to coaches in any training camp.
  • Can immediately improve a team's inside running game as FSU's inside running improved immensely when he moved inside.

Weaknesses

  • Was susceptible to both the bull-rush and edge speed at times. Can be passive in the run game, attempting to finesse over beating defenders to the punch.
  • While versatility is a strength, he is not polished at center, where he will almost certainly play at the NFL level.
  • Not mean enough to be considered a mauler, guard may be too physical a spot for him to succeed for long stretches of time.

NFL player comparison: Dylan Gandy

While Erving's a much higher-rated college prospect, both are intelligent, versatile linemen who switched to center in their senior seasons. Erving should develop into a better pro than Gandy, but will most likely make the most impact at center, where his size, smarts and athleticism will be coveted.

Ideal Fit: Detroit Lions

The Lions are in desperate need of help at multiple positions along the offensive line. Center and guard need to be addressed and Erving would be an immediate upgrade at either position. If Detroit passes at 23, the Indianapolis Colts are an excellent fit at 29.

Draft Projection: Round 1 (20-32)
