Strengths

  • A good athlete who routinely gets to the second level when run-blocking. Has the athleticism to engage with linebackers and safeties downfield.
  • Good lateral movement and seals the edge well on sweeps and tosses.
  • Doesn't just deliver an initial blow. Continues his block throughout the play.
  • Excellent lower-body strength that helps him maintain his ground in pass-blocking situations.
  • Has the versatility to play tackle or guard.

Weaknesses

  • Lunges too often in pass protection and sometimes has difficulty maintaining control of an edge rusher.
  • Vulnerable to inside moves when pass-blocking.
  • Needs to show better awareness on screens and take better routes to attack defenders.
  • Disappointed at the combine with only 23 reps on the bench press.

NFL player comparison: Duane Brown

Both players have a high motor and love to get up the field in the run game. Although Brown is a far more polished pass-blocker at the moment, Scherff's ceiling could be higher. Much like Brown, Scherff has the athletic ability for a 300-plus-pounder to become an elite tackle in the NFL.

Ideal fit: New York Giants

The G-Men are desperate for help on the offensive line, and Scherff's ability to play guard or tackle make him a perfect fit. Right tackle Justin Pugh is still struggling to acclimate himself to the pro game and Scherff could be an upgrade in that role. Given all the injuries New York had up front last season, it's clear there was a major lack of depth at the position.

Draft projection: Round 1 (5-15)
