Strengths
- Dual-threat quarterback with exceptional arm strength and quick release.
- Has the functional mobility to extend plays outside the pocket.
- Prototypical size for the position.
- Competitive and intelligent; natural leadership ability.
- Had a solid combine showing, finishing second among quarterbacks in the three-cone drill and tying for third in the broad jump.
Weaknesses
- Possesses plenty of natural ability, but could be a few years away from being NFL-ready.
- Needs to improve his decision-making, particularly when it comes to moving from his first option to his second.
- Some scouts are concerned that the back injury Petty sustained in September 2014 may have been more serious than was let on.
- Inconsistent with his deep-ball accuracy and needs to work on stepping into his throws.
- Played majority of his college career in the shotgun, though he did take every snap under center at Baylor's pro day, completing 69-of-77 passes with five drops.
- Total yards, touchdowns and yards per attempt declined in 2014. He also doubled his interception total from the previous season.
NFL player comparison: Brandon Weeden
Petty is nearly identical in size to Weeden and comes from a spread offense that relies on quick reads. It's unlikely Petty will be a first-round pick like Weeden was, but his pro day did a lot to help his draft stock.
Ideal fit: Dallas Cowboys
Petty will need time to develop at the NFL level, which makes it highly unlikely that he'll end up with a quarterback-needy team. The Cowboys have used just three of their draft picks on quarterbacks since 1990, but with Tony Romo about to turn 35 years old, it may be time to start thinking about the future.
