Rivera stands by benching Newton, knew it would cause a 'feeding frenzy'
Carolina Panthers head coach Ron Rivera says he's content with his decision to bench starting quarterback Cam Newton for violating the team's dress code by not wearing a tie.
Newton gave way to Derek Anderson for the Panthers' first offensive snap against the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday night. Anderson threw an interception on the play. Newton returned on the next series and the Panthers were blown out in the game.
Nonetheless, Rivera said he is comfortable with the course of action he chose because it shows he's consistent in how he treats all his players.
Rivera told reporters he's doled out similar discipline in the past, "just not with the quarterback," according to Bill Voth of Black and Blue Review.
Rivera added that he knew with Newton involved this time it would be "a feeding frenzy."
Rivera said he isn't concerned about any fallout in the locker room following the decision and considers the matter closed.
