Bogaerts: Red Sox told me I'm not getting traded
The Boston Red Sox aren't trading Xander Bogaerts before the Aug. 2 trade deadline, the All-Star shortstop said following Thursday's win over the Cleveland Guardians, according to The Boston Globe's Julian McWilliams.
Bogaerts said the Red Sox told him he won't be dealt, and it's allowed him to relax some. The infielder hit a three-run homer during Boston's 4-2 victory over Cleveland.
"I don't know if I'll get in trouble for saying that," he said.
Bogaerts, who can opt out of his contract following the 2022 season, had been mentioned as a trade candidate with the Red Sox losing seven of their last ten and posting a 7-17 record in July.
The shortstop's comments confirmed what Red Sox chief baseball officer Chaim Bloom said on Tuesday in regards to Boston potentially trading some of its stars.
"We haven't had any discussions internally or with any other club about moving (Bogaerts). We don't plan to," Bloom said, echoing Red Sox president Sam Kennedy's comments that Bogaerts and Rafael Devers haven't been discussed in trade talks, according to Jason Mastrodonato of the Boston Herald.
Bogaerts and the Red Sox have been unable to reach an agreement on a potential extension, with the two sides reportedly more than $100 million apart in talks as of last April.
The 29-year-old Bogaerts owns a .318/.393/.463 slash line with eight homers, 27 doubles, and 42 RBIs this season.
He's posted a .292/.356/.459 line with 149 homers and 652 RBIs over the course of his 10-year career with the Red Sox, which has included four Silver Sluggers and two World Series wins.
