Report: Red Sox, Bogaerts over $100M apart in extension talks
It appears the Boston Red Sox and shortstop Xander Bogaerts are nowhere close to reaching a long-term agreement.
Boston reportedly proposed adding an extra year worth about $30 million to Bogaerts' current contract, the New York Post's Jon Heyman reports. The offer would've brought Bogaerts' potential earnings to around $90 million, as he's currently set to earn $20 million per season through 2024. However, that left the two sides over $100 million apart, Heyman adds.
Bogaerts, who can opt out after this campaign, apparently didn't submit a counteroffer. A friend of the three-time All-Star called the proposal a "slap in the face."
One rival general manager who heard about the offer questioned Boston's desire to keep Bogaerts long term after the club handed Trevor Story a six-year, $140-million contract in March. However, Red Sox chief baseball officer Chaim Bloom reaffirmed his team's commitment to both Bogaerts and Rafael Devers, who's also reportedly over $100 million apart in extension talks with the club.
"Trevor doesn't change our desire to keep the other two guys," Bloom told Heyman. "We're hopeful we can keep both guys."
Bogaerts is hitting .263/.333/.316 with zero home runs, one double, and one RBI in five games to start this season.
