Woods sent support video before Masters to Varner's friend battling cancer
Harold Varner III, a self-proclaimed Tiger Woods superfan, had rooting interests that exceeded fandom while watching his hero win the Masters for the fifth time.
Varner knew a Tiger victory would mean much more to his friend battling cancer, Daniel Meggs, who received a supportive video from Woods during the week of the Masters thanks to his efforts.
"It's giving me chills right now just how it went down," Varner recalled at his Wells Fargo Championship press conference. "A good friend of mine's been struggling and I asked Tiger to make a video for him.
"(Tiger) sent it on Wednesday and (Meggs) replied and is like 'I think good things are going to happen because my birthday is on Sunday,'" he continued. "With what (Meggs is) going through and how that happened was way more important than Tiger actually winning."
Varner has developed a relationship with Woods over the years, having played many practice rounds together. He insists it's the first favor he's asked of Tiger after learning of his friend's worsening condition.
"I've never asked him for anything," the 28-year-old said. "I sent it to (Meggs) and he sent the greatest reply ever. He said 'Well, I can die now.' We were laughing and he's like 'No man, it's really cool. I really needed this.'"
Varner, an East Carolina alum, grew up playing junior golf with Meggs, who received the Arnold Palmer Scholarship to attend Wake Forest. He reached out to his close friend right after Tiger's winning putt at Augusta.
"I called him. For a good 20 seconds, we didn't say anything," Varner added. "We just cried. It was just super awesome. Like, I didn't do anything, but the joy that I got out of seeing him talk to me, I just can't put it into words."
