Domenic Basile, the lawyer for Toronto Blue Jays pitcher Roberto Osuna, told reporters in Toronto on Monday his client intends to plead not guilty in his assault case, according to Sportsnet's Shi Davidi.

Basile represented his client at the case's first court date at Toronto's Old City Hall on Monday. Osuna did not attend.

The lawyer revealed to reporters outside the courthouse his client has been going back and forth between Toronto and Florida and has been staying in shape by working out at the Blue Jays' facility in Dunedin.

A report, which surfaced early Monday morning from Yahoo Sports' Jeff Passan, who cited sources, suggested Osuna's chances of returning this season were "slim."

The 23-year-old Osuna was arrested and charged with assaulting a woman on May 8. His next hearing date will be July 9 and his paid administrative leave was extended to June 25, according to MLB Communications.
