Report: 'Slim' chance Osuna returns for Blue Jays this season

Roberto Osuna's season may be over.

The Toronto Blue Jays shouldn't expect to have the All-Star closer return any time soon, according to sources of Yahoo Sports' Jeff Passan, who call his chances of coming back before the end of the season "slim."

Osuna's first court date is set for Monday at Old City Hall in Toronto. The pitcher won't appear, however, and will instead be represented by criminal defence lawyer Domenic Basile, who briefly spoke with Betsy Powell of the Toronto Star about the case.

"It is an assault charge, it is domestic set date court, they call it, but it is an alleged domestic abuse," Basile said.

"I’ve met with him, he’d, obviously, like to get back to playing baseball. That’s a given. He’s a young guy who, I think he’s a superstar, and he’s got, a lot of years, god willing, ahead of him to play baseball."

Osuna was arrested and charged with assaulting a woman on May 8 and has been on paid administrative leave since.

While details of the incident haven't been released, multiple sources of Passan's who are familiar with the case called it "ugly."

As part of the conditions of his release, Osuna was ordered not to communicate with the woman involved in the incident, to stay 100 metres away from his condo, and was also instructed not to buy, consume, or possess alcohol or possess any kind of weapons, according to Sportsnet's Shi Davidi.
