Report: Athletics asked for either of Yankees' top 2 prospects in Gray talks

The Oakland Athletics aren't letting Sonny Gray go cheaply.

While the New York Yankees were said to be making progress with the Athletics in a deal to land the 27-year-old right-hander, Oakland is reportedly asking for packages that include either of the Bronx Bombers' top two prospects in Clint Frazier and Gleyber Torres, report Jon Heyman and Robert Murray of FanRag Sports.

The Yankees, however, aren't willing to part with either Torres or Frazier, who are rated No. 3 and No. 27, respectively, among all prospects in baseball, according to MLB Pipeline.

Though much of the trade talk surrounding starting pitchers in recent weeks has surrounded Yu Darvish - who the Texas Rangers have reportedly informed teams they will deal ahead of the deadline - Gray presents another enticing option for teams looking for a starter.

After being hampered by injuries in 2016 when he pitched to a 5.69 ERA in just 22 starts, Gray is currently in the midst of a resurgent season with Oakland, crafting a 3.43 ERA in 16 starts.

Unlike Darvish, however, Gray is under team control through the 2019 season, allowing the Athletics to up their asking price on the market.
