Rangers place struggling Dyson on DL with hand contusion
The Texas Rangers will have to find themselves a new ninth-inning man after all.
Texas has placed struggling closer Sam Dyson on the 10-day disabled list with a right hand contusion, according to Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News. It's not clear how or when the injury occurred, though Dyson did mishandle a comebacker during his outing on Sunday in Seattle.
In a corresponding move, right-hander Keone Kela - who began the season in the minors following a behavioral incident at spring training - has been recalled from Triple-A.
Matt Bush will be the first arm out of manager Jeff Banister's bullpen in the ninth inning, according to TR Sullivan of MLB.com.
Dyson's issues in the ninth inning to start this season became magnified Sunday after he blew his third save opportunity in three tries. The 28-year-old owns a 27.00 ERA in 4 1/3 innings pitched, and has allowed three earned runs in three of his four appearances when the Rangers either had a lead or were tied. His only clean outings came in a pair of mop-up appearances in blowouts.
"I'm borderline pissed off and angry. You'd think so after four outings like that," Dyson said Sunday after blowing his third save despite not allowing a ball to leave the infield. "I'm confident in my stuff. I feel like I executed my stuff. I got the ball on the ground. I just didn't get the job done."
Dyson has saved 40 games in a Rangers uniform since joining the team in July 2015; 38 of those came as their closer last season.
Kela, who turned 24 on Sunday, returns to the club after an incident during a minor-league game in spring training prompted Texas to demote him for the beginning of the season. The right-hander emerged as a force in Texas' bullpen during his rookie season in 2015 but struggled to follow that up last year while struggling with injuries.
