Report: Mark Mangino left Iowa State due to power struggle

Former offensive coordinator Mark Mangino and head coach Paul Rhoads may have not been on the same page at Iowa State.

Mangino and Rhodes repeatedly clashed over plays, formations, personnel, and philosophies, according to Bobby La Gesse of Ames Tribune.

"Mark and I couldn't get on the same page on a few important items,” Rhoads said Monday. "We tried to talk it through again this morning in an effort to get us moving in a different direction."

Specifically, Mangino insisted on throwing the ball, while Rhoads wanted a run-first approach, Randy Peterson of the Des Moines Register reports. It's still unclear whether Mangino quit or was fired, but regardless, Iowa State has a new offensive coordinator.

"They were not on the same page and coach Rhoads wanted him to do several things that coach Mangino didn't want to do and was committed to doing it his way and in the end you can only have one head football coach," Iowa State athletic director James Pollard said in a radio interview with KXNO. That is what resulted in their parting ways."

Mangino came to Iowa State in January 2014 with much fanfare. As an offensive coordinator, he helped steer Oklahoma to a national championship in 2000. As the head coach at Kansas, he was named AP Coach of the Year in 2007, when he also led the Jayhawks to an Orange Bowl victory.

But Rhoads openly questioned the offensive staff after Iowa State's loss to rival Iowa on Sept. 12 and again after falling to TCU on Oct. 17.

As part of Monday's announcement, Iowa State named quarterbacks coach and passing game coordinator Todd Sturdy the team's new offensive coordinator.
