Utah-Arizona State canceled due to COVID-19

Sunday's matchup between Utah and Arizona State is canceled due to COVID-19 issues, the Pac-12 announced in a statement.

The Sun Devils didn't meet the minimum number of scholarship players available for the game, according to the conference.

The matchup will officially be declared a no-contest.

The Sun Devils have now had three consecutive games canceled due to an ongoing COVID-19 outbreak within the program. Multiple players and staff members, including head coach Herm Edwards, have tested positive.

Arizona State has been out of action since its season-opening loss to USC. However, ASU athletic director Ray Anderson is optimistic the program can return to the field for its Dec. 5 matchup against UCLA.

"Notwithstanding any new issues, we are confident in our chances of playing football next week," Anderson said, according to The Athletic's Doug Haller.

Utah will now search for a new opponent on short notice a week after playing its first game of the year. The Utes were forced to cancel matchups against Arizona and UCLA due to virus-related issues.

If Utah is unable to find a substitute for this weekend, its next game is scheduled for Dec. 5 versus Oregon State.
