Texas Tech dismisses Kingsbury after 6 seasons

Texas Tech fired head coach Kliff Kingsbury on Sunday after six seasons, the school announced.

Kingsbury amassed a 35-40 record at Texas Tech, where he previously played quarterback. The Red Raiders featured a high-powered offense perennially under Kingsbury, but managed to post just two winning seasons.

"For what he achieved and contributed to Texas Tech, as an athlete, a student and our football coach, Kliff Kingsbury has a special place in the hearts of Red Raiders," Texas Tech president Lawrence Schovanec said in a statement. "As a coach, he was a model of class and character, and he always put the best interests of his student-athletes first. I admire and appreciate all he has done for Texas Tech."

Kingsbury figures to have plenty of coaching opportunities going forward, and may even wind up in the NFL as an offensive assistant. He helped develop Cleveland Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield and Kansas City Chiefs pivot Patrick Mahomes during his time at Texas Tech.

The Red Raiders finished the 2018 season on a five-game losing streak, costing them a chance to play in a bowl game.
