Indiana HC Kevin Wilson resigns, DC Tom Allen takes over on permanent basis

Indiana announced they accepted the resignation of head coach Kevin Wilson Thursday evening, and immediately named defensive coordinator Tom Allen as his successor on a permanent basis.

"I appreciate Coach Wilson's many positive contributions to our football program," athletic director Fred Glass said in a statement. "This has nothing to do with the performance of the football team, which I view as quite positive and very much headed in the right direction."

A report surfaced earlier Thursday that Indiana was set to fire Wilson due to complaints of player mistreatment, and while it ended up being a resignation, Glass' comments certainly suggest it was off-field issues that led to the change.

Many people assumed Allen would take over as the interim head coach for the Hoosiers upcoming bowl game, but Glass decided to skip that step altogether and name the defensive coordinator as the new head coach of the program.

"Once Coach Wilson and I concluded to part ways, I turned to determining who the best person in the country would be to keep our momentum and take us to another level with our football team," Glass said. "I quickly concluded that person was in our midst in Tom Allen. He is a leader of men. He is demanding without being demeaning. He is a proven, successful coach on a national scale with deep Indiana ties. He cares about his players, and they care back."

Allen just completed his first season with the Hoosiers, coming over from South Florida the previous campaign. He was recently listed as a nominee for the 2016 Broyles Award, honoring the top assistant coach in the country.

The move ends Wilson's six-year run with the program after he posted back-to-back six-win seasons for the first time since 1993-94.
