Texas starts Shane Buechele at quarterback vs. Notre Dame
Texas head coach Charlie Strong started true freshman Shane Buechele at quarterback against Notre Dame on Sunday.
Buechele beat out senior Tyrone Swoopes for the starting job, and has been on the Austin campus since January, throwing for 299 yards and two touchdowns in the Longhorns' spring game.
Earlier in the day, Texas released its depth chart which had both quarterbacks slated at the starting position. The team also released a pregame roster listing uniform-number changes, which included Buechele switching from No. 16 to No. 7.
The 6-foot-1, four-star recruit out of Arlington threw for 6,379 yards and 73 touchdowns during his high school career, rushing for 1,805 yards and 21 scores.
His father, Steve Buechele, is a Texas Rangers bench coach and former Major League player. He won't be at the Rangers' game on Sunday, having received permission to leave the team to watch his son make his college debut.
Swoopes will be the backup signal-caller and will likely be called upon in short-yardage situations.
