Memphis Grizzlies assistant coach Jerry Stackhouse has joined Vanderbilt as its next head coach, the school announced Friday.

The 44-year-old and the Commodores agreed to a six-year deal, sources told ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski.

Stackhouse has been an assistant coach in Memphis since last season and previously served in that role with the Toronto Raptors. The former NBA All-Star has interviewed for multiple head coaching positions in the league but failed to land a job.

Meanwhile, the Commodores hired athletic director Malcolm Turner in February and then fired head coach Bryce Drew in March following the worst season in school history. Vanderbilt went just 9-23 and lost all 18 conference games in 2018-19, while Drew went 40-59 across three seasons in charge.

Turner previously served as president of the NBA G League (formerly known as the D-League), where he watched Stackhouse lead the Toronto Raptors' affiliate, Raptors 905, to a championship before being named Coach of the Year for 2016-17.
