Report: Warriors won't match Cavs' offer sheet for Patrick McCaw
The Golden State Warriors are turning the page on Patrick McCaw.
The two-time defending NBA champs won't match the Cleveland Cavaliers' two-year, $6 million offer sheet for McCaw, barring a late change of heart, league sources told ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski.
The Warriors have up until Sunday at 11:59 p.m. ET to match but reportedly have no plans on doing so before the deadline.
If the Warriors choose to match, their luxury tax bill would increase from $50.3 million to $61.6 million, according to ESPN's Bobby Marks.
The deal is non-guaranteed, which gives Cleveland some options. If McCaw is cut before Jan. 7, the club won't be on the hook for his pro-rated $3-million salary, allowing the 23-year-old to become an unrestricted free agent.
If the Cavs hold onto McCaw, the team can view the rest of the season as an audition and determine whether or not it's worth guaranteeing the second year of his contract.
The Warriors wanted to keep an open roster spot for flexibility and are expected to guarantee Alfonzo McKinnie's contract.
McCaw has yet to play this season after rejecting a two-year, $5.2-million deal to stay with the Warriors this summer, as well as his $1.7-million qualifying offer.
While McCaw's agent urged his client to accept the Warriors' deal, the 23-year-old sided with his father, Jeff, who reportedly wanted his son to seek a more prominent role elsewhere.
McCaw won a pair of rings with Golden State, averaging 4 points per contest on 42.1 percent shooting in 128 games.
