Report: Grizzlies, Nets among teams looking at sign-and-trade for Smart

No traction is being made on a new contract for Marcus Smart with the Boston Celtics, so he's exploring his options as a number of teams push for the restricted free agent's services.

The Memphis Grizzlies and Brooklyn Nets have reportedly inquired about a sign-and-trade for Smart, a source close to the 24-year-old told Yahoo Sports' Jordan Schultz.

Smart - who has already met with Brooklyn - reportedly dropped his asking price below $15 million per season to secure a multi-year deal. But since he's restricted, Boston will have the right to match any offer sheet that comes his way.

The Celtics have had "zero communication or contact" with Smart, according to Schultz, which certainly doesn't make matters easier. There may be a strained relationship between the two sides, as although Smart "loves" Boston, he's reportedly "hurt" and "disgusted" by the team's lack of urgency to retain him.

He could always sign his $6.1 million qualifying offer, allowing him to hit next summer's market unrestricted.

Smart is revered for being a tenacious and aggressive perimeter defender. That overshadows his shortcomings as a shooter, as he's never converted better than 37 percent of his shots in a season. He averaged 10.2 points and 4.8 assists across 54 appearances in 2017-18 for the 55-win Celtics.
