Hassan Whiteside will now be afforded the time to nurse a lingering knee injury that has been causing him grief since the start of the season.

The Miami Heat announced Thursday that the 28-year-old center will begin a rehab regimen on a bone bruise in his left knee that will take place over the next one-to-two weeks.

The injury initially occurred during the Heat's season opener against the Orlando Magic. Whiteside missed the following five games, with the team going 2-3 during that stretch.

He's averaging a double-double of 14.9 points and 12.7 rebounds on 58.1 percent shooting through 15 appearances for the 10-11 Heat. Whiteside's playing time has taken a noticeable hit, down from 32.6 minutes a season ago to just 26.8.

Coming off a blowout 115-86 loss at the hands of the New York Knicks Wednesday night at Madison Square Garden sans Whiteside, Miami will be back in action Friday against the visiting Charlotte Hornets.
