Kyrie Irving's 'Uncle Drew' ads to be adapted into feature film

USA Today Sports

Kyrie Irving warned the world in October that "something big" was coming for Uncle Drew and his crew of elderly ballers - he wasn't lying.

Sources told Variety that Temple Hill Entertainment has acquired exclusive film rights to adapt Irving's Uncle Drew Pepsi commercial series for the big screen, where the Cleveland Cavaliers All-Star point guard is expected to reprise his leading role.

The original commercials centered around Irving rolling up to street ball courts in full face make-up to challenge unsuspecting players to let him get in on a game. The comedy was a given from the get-go:

Screenwriter Jay Longino pitched the idea for the movie to Temple Hill and producers Marty Bowen, Wyck Godfrey, and John Fischer ran with the idea. Longino has also been confirmed to have signed on to be the main script writer for the project.

The rough concept centers around Drew being challenged to a street ball tournament as an old man, many years after his younger glory days, and him having to set out on a mission to gather up his old squad to line up beside him in said tournament.

Michael Jordan and Kevin Durant paved the way for players to star in their own basketball movies, but hopefully this project will be a little more Space Jam, and a little less Thunderstruck.
