Betances: Jeter said 'take as much as you can' from Yankees
Dellin Betances, one of baseball's most dominant relievers, is set to become one-third of what is expected to be an electric bullpen with the New York Yankees alongside Andrew Miller and Aroldis Chapman (when he returns from suspension).
But before he earned a reputation as a back-end stalwart, Betances was getting career advice from longtime Yankees great Derek Jeter before signing his first major-league deal.
"I think when I got drafted, he said, 'take as much as you can from them.' That was his advice," Betances told ESPN's Andrew Marchand.
When asked if he took Jeter's advice, Betances said, "I guess. I got a good deal ($1-million signing bonus)."
Betances, a born and raised New Yorker, received a $1-million signing bonus with the club after being drafted in the eighth round in 2006, and still hasn't received a big payday in his career, earning $507,500 last season.
The 27-year-old right-hander owns a 1.78 ERA in his four years in the bigs, which includes a strikeout rate of 13.8 per nine innings.
