The New York Mets are running out of time to acquire a hitter before the non-waiver trade deadline, but are closing in on a target.

The Mets worked overnight on a deal to land Cincinnati Reds outfielder Jay Bruce in a package that's believed to include right-hander Zack Wheeler, according to multiple reports. The clubs were reportedly reviewing medical records as of Friday morning.

Bruce, a hulking left-handed hitter, would inject some much needed power into the middle of the Mets lineup. The veteran is hitting .257/.341/.486 with 17 homers, 23 doubles, and 59 RBIs in 97 games.

Rosenthal speculated the Mets would move Curtis Granderson from right field to center to accommodate Bruce, putting Juan Lagares on the bench.

The Mets had a deal for outfielder Carlos Gomez in place Wednesday night, but backed out after reviewing his medicals. Gomez has since been shipped to the Houston Astros.

Bruce is signed through 2016 at $12.5 million and has a $13-million team option for 2017.

Wheeler has been sidelined since March after undergoing Tommy John surgery and is expected to return sometime in June or July of 2016. The 25-year-old went 11-11 with a 3.54 ERA and 1.32 WHIP in 2014 to go with 187 strikeouts in 185 1/3 innings.
