The St. Louis Cardinals added another veteran arm to their bullpen Friday morning, acquiring right-hander Jonathan Broxton from the Milwaukee Brewers hours before the non-waiver trade deadline.

The Brewers will receive minor-league outfielder Malik Collymore from St. Louis in exchange for the two-time All-Star who, incidentally, was acquired by Milwaukee last August in a trade with the Cincinnati Reds.

The 31-year-old has struggled mightily this season, managing a 5.89 ERA with a 1.39 WHIP over 40 appearances despite posting his best strikeout rate (23.7 percent) since 2010, when he earned his second All-Star appearance. Broxton, a second-round pick in 2002, has a $9-million mutual option for next season with a $2-million buyout.

Over parts of 11 seasons in the majors, Broxton owns a 3.25 ERA (127 ERA+) with a 1.23 WHIP across stints with the Brewers, Reds, Kansas City Royals, and Los Angeles Dodgers, collecting 118 saves in 169 opportunities.

Collymore, meanwhile, has endured a volatile start to his professional career being selected in the tenth round of the 2013 draft. After posting an .883 OPS in the Gulf Coast League last summer, the 20-year-old Canadian is hitting just .216/.326/.378 with two home runs through 23 games in the rookie-level Appalachian League this season.
