The Atlanta Braves traded right-handed reliever Anthony Varvaro to the Boston Red Sox for minor league right-hander Aaron Kurcz, the teams announced.
Varvaro was designated for assignment by the Braves on Monday to make room on the 40-man roster for infielder Alberto Callaspo.
The 30-year-old had spent the last four years with the Braves, making 123 appearances over the past two seasons. In 54 2/3 innings in 2013, Varvaro posted a 2.63 ERA and 1.07 WHIP, while striking out 50 batters.
Kurcz, 23, spent last season with Double-A Portland, making 34 appearances in relief. The 11th-round pick by the Chicago Cubs in 2010, Kurcz managed a 2.14 ERA and 1.28 WHIP in 42 innings while striking out 54.
