Royals sign Mujica to minors deal

The Kansas City Royals signed former All-Star reliever Edward Mujica to a minor-league contract, the team announced Friday.
Mujica will report to the Triple-A Omaha Storm Chasers.
Mujica asked for, and received, his release from the Philadelphia Phillies on Thursday after spending the entire season with their Triple-A affiliate in Lehigh Valley. Serving as the IronPigs' closer, Mujica tallied 23 saves and 27 strikeouts to go with a 3.69 ERA in 36 games, and made the International League's All-Star team.
The 32-year-old was an MLB All-Star in 2013 with the St. Louis Cardinals, when he recorded 37 saves for the eventual NL pennant winners in what remains his best big-league season. He posted a 4.75 ERA over 49 games in 2015 split between the Red Sox and Athletics.
Mujica owns a 3.85 ERA, 423 strikeouts, and 50 saves during his 10-year major-league career.
