Look: Ronaldo's photo with Buddha statue draws ire on social media
Real Madrid winger Cristiano Ronaldo might be in a spot of trouble with some of his fans after the Portuguese icon posted a photo to social media that upset some fans because of its perceived disrespect toward Buddhists.
Ronaldo's right foot is placed on the base of a statue of the Buddha's head, and not all of the Portuguese footballer's 79.7 million Instagram followers and 117 million Facebook fans were pleased with his pose.
By Thursday afternoon, 50,000 fans had responded with an "angry" reaction on Facebook, leaving plenty of comments calling Ronaldo out.
"This is disrespectful .... How can he put his leg on Gautam Buddha .... I was not expecting this stupidity from Ronaldo," said one of Ronaldo's fans, Shubham Pandey, on Facebook.
"Ronaldo has lost one of his fans just now," wrote Eranda Lesnar Ranasinghe. "You can't step on a Lord Buddha's statue you idiot.. We didn't (expect) such a disrespectful behavior from you."
Ronaldo won't take all the blame for this incident, however, as AS points out that his social media manager Marisa Mendes - daughter of Ronaldo's agent Jorge Mendes - is "responsible for all his social media activity."
