Watford is hopeful of completing a deal for Younes Kaboul after Sunderland confirmed it had accepted an offer following a request from the player's agent.

Manager David Moyes was believed to be reluctant to let the French defender leave following impressive performances in last season's successful relegation fight, and a solid outing in last Saturday's 2-1 defeat at Manchester City.

But, at the request of Kaboul, he has been allowed to discuss personal terms with Watford for a fee in the region of £4 million, according to the Guardian's Louise Taylor.

The Black Cats' statement included:

Younes had spoken with David Moyes in recent days, expressing his desire to leave the club for personal reasons.

The club therefore agreed to a request from the player’s representative to be allowed to speak to Watford regarding a move.

An agreement has been reached between the two clubs and the player has been given permission to talk to Watford regarding personal terms.

The former Tottenham Hotspur man apparently wants to move back to the London area, but Taylor initially noted there was a possibility that he could use the Hornets' interest as leverage in earning an improved deal at Sunderland.

Kaboul's words enclosed with this statement would refute that suggestion, however.

"This is not an easy situation for me, but the club and the manager have shown an understanding of my personal circumstances and I am grateful for that," said the 30-year-old.

"The Sunderland fans have supported me fantastically well since I came to the club, they gave me my passion back and I sincerely thank them for that. I hope they understand that I have made this incredibly difficult decision for me."

Moyes could now instead reinvest the money acquired from the potential sale on someone to accompany uncompromising centre-half Lamine Kone, who's expected to sign a new contract at Sunderland despite interest from Everton.

And an alternative to Kaboul could be Matt Miazga.
