Four years ago, they endured spells rotting away on Jose Mourinho's Chelsea bench before securing career-reviving moves abroad. Now, Mohamed Salah and Kevin De Bruyne are the class of the English top flight.

This begs the question: Salah or De Bruyne - who has been England's best?

Salah's goal Sunday against lowly Bournemouth was his league-best 14th and his 20th in all competitions, making the tricky Egyptian attacker the first Liverpool player to bag 20 before Christmas since Ian Rush did so during the 1986-86 campaign. That's now nine goals in eight league outings for the summer signing.

Like Salah, De Bruyne has been simply unplayable through 18 matches. His eight assists is the joint-highest tally in the Premier League, and the crafty Belgian has been the engine of a unstoppable Manchester City attack that has registered an obscene 56 league goals for a plus-44 goal differential. His strike Saturday against Tottenham was his third in five games to go with two helpers and a pair of Man-of-the-Match displays.
