The Hamilton Tiger-Cats traded for the rights to Calgary Stampeders quarterback Bo Levi Mitchell, the league announced Monday.

Mitchell heads to Hamilton in exchange for a 2023 third-round pick, a 2024 fifth-round selection, and future consideration.

Mitchell is a pending free agent this offseason. He's expected to sign a new contract with the Ticats, according to TSN's Dave Naylor.

The 32-year-old lost the Stamps' starting role this year to Jake Maier, who recently signed an extension through 2024. Mitchell's final appearance with Calgary came in last week's loss to the BC Lions in the West Division semifinal. He entered the contest after Maier struggled under center, logging his first game appearance since August.

Mitchell has spent his entire CFL career in Calgary after joining the team in 2012. He's the club's all-time leader in passing yards and a two-time Grey Cup champion.

The Ticats posted an 8-10 record in 2022, with Dane Evans and Matthew Shiltz both seeing time at quarterback. Their season ended with a loss to the Montreal Alouettes in the East Division semifinal. Evans, who's scheduled to earn approximately $455,000 in 2023, tossed only 16 touchdowns against 16 interceptions this campaign.

If Hamilton can sign Mitchell to an extension, the team would likely be forced to release Evans or significantly restructure his current deal, according to 3DownNation.
