Late defensive stand helps Stamps top Lions

A late defensive stop helped the Calgary Stampeders edge the BC Lions on Friday night, as the road team secured a 21-17 victory at BC Place in Vancouver.

The Lions began their final possession in Calgary territory following a 29-yard punt return from Chris Rainey, but Jonathon Jennings and the offense turned the ball over on downs six snaps later, sealing the result.

Calgary's Bo Levi Mitchell had a rare off night, as he went just 15-of-31 for 237 yards and an interception. Jerome Messam rushed for 69 yards and a touchdown, while Rene Paredes provided most of the points with five field goals.

Jennings was the more prolific quarterback, as he went 26-of-38 for 240 yards, adding a passing and rushing touchdown apiece, but his two interceptions proved costly.

Alex Singleton stood out on defense for the Stamps, as he notched a team-high seven tackles plus a pick. Solomon Elimimian led the Lions with 10 tackles.

The Stampeders will take a 6-1-1 record into an Aug. 26 meeting with the Toronto Argonauts. The Lions, who now own a 5-4 record, will try to bounce back against the Ottawa RedBlacks the same day.
