Philadelphia Flyers forward Wayne Simmonds was tossed from Saturday's game against the New York Rangers for a retaliatory punch on defenseman Ryan McDonagh.

The incident took place midway through the first period, after McDonagh caught Simmonds with a high stick while trying to brace himself for a hit. Simmonds delivered a two-handed slash and a punch to McDonagh's face.

Simmonds was assessed a match penalty for intent to injure and a game misconduct on the play, while McDonagh received a minor for slashing and a minor for high-sticking.

McDonagh left the game and did not return.

After the game, Flyers head coach Dave Hakstol stopped short of criticizing the officials, but said Simmonds was fortunate not to be injured by McDonagh's cross-check.
