Division 1 powerhouse Boston University is in the throes of a gambling scandal.

Multiple outlets reported Monday that former third-year forward Nick Roberto, banned by the program at the season's outset, will not play for the rest of the year because of ties to gambling activity.

The university reportedly self-investigated the matter, turning in evidence to the NCAA.

WEEI.com reports that Roberto did not bet on college or professional hockey, but did bet on other sports. He was also not the only student-athlete involved, but apparently the only current player who participated in the activity - which is banned at all levels in NCAA athletics.

Roberto is still enrolled at BU and considered a member of the hockey team.

Keith O'Connell, a former BU defenseman, was one of 33 people indicted last week in connection to an illegal gambling operation in Boston.

Boston University won its 30th Beanpot over Northeastern last season.
