Lundqvist credits superb start to being 'more relaxed'

Kim Klement-USA TODAY Sports

Henrik Lundqvist is the best goalie in hockey. This season, at least.

The most important member of the New York Rangers spoke about his immaculate numbers almost two months into the season after recording his second shutout Monday night, and said the key to his game is his new approach: he's thinking big picture.

"I'm more relaxed this year," Lundqvist said, according to the New York Post's Larry Brooks. "I've always been so intense, but I've taken it down a notch. I'm very focused on the process."

It's working. Lundqvist is 12-3-2 with a .946 save percentage. He's the main reason the Rangers have 34 points, tied for most in the league, even though New York rarely possesses the puck at 5-on-5. The club's 45.5 Corsi For rating is second-last in the league.

The Rangers were soundly outshot Monday night. The Nashville Predators had a 25-7 advantage after two periods, and New York led 1-0. The shots ended 31-19 in Nashville's favor, but the Rangers won 3-0.

"I don't expect the team to play a perfect game," Lundqvist said. "As a goalie, you need to be there for your team. As long as I take care of my part, I know they're going to get going."

Lundqvist has faced 553 shots and stopped 523 of them. He's seen the most pucks, and made the most saves. He's doing his part - this, after being challenged by head coach Alain Vigneault to have a strong start to the season.

Season Opening-month SV%
2015-16 .943
2014-15 .891
2013-14 .908
2012-13 .904

The season's a slog, but by relaxing, Lundqvist is getting even better. Astonishing, considering he'll be 34 in March, and he's played 76 playoff games since 2012.

"It's just more focus," Lundqvist said. "I'm even smiling during games. I never did that in nine years. Smiling is good."
