Report: No coach's challenge in preseason; league uncomfortable with test drive

The coach's challenge will debut in NHL arenas this fall, but it will reportedly have to wait until the regular season begins.

"There are still buildings that haven't officially gone through the facilities test yet, and that's a problem by NHL standards," TSN's Darren Dreger reported during Friday's edition of "Insider Trading."

The delay in rolling it out isn't just due to a lack of testing.

"There are buildings (that) are ready to test the coach's challenge, but I'm told that the commissioner's office is uncomfortable with the test drive during the preseason because it might supply some level of competitive edge," Dreger said.

"So the first time NHL coaches are going to see the coach's challenge, or any of us for that matter, is on day one of the regular season."

The NHL's board of governors approved the challenge in June. It will allow coaches to call for reviews on potential goaltender interference and offside goals, as long as they haven't used their timeout.
